Now that might sound a bit exaggerated. But it definitely is true, for dentists could not only help you deal with cavities and plaque and tartar, but are also capable of picking up early signs of mouth cancer. This is Bristol writes:
Visits to the dentist may seem like just another chore but, with one person dying of mouth cancer every five hours in the UK, it is a trip that could mean the difference between life and death. As well as checking the health of teeth, dentists are also able to pick up on the early signs of mouth cancer, which, when caught early, can often be treated successfully.
Mouth cancer can appear in different forms, sometimes as a white or red patch, but most often it appears as a painless ulcer that doesn't heal.
A dentist can check the mouth, including the cheeks, tongue, gums and lips, for signs of cancer during a regular dental check-up.
This is especially important for people in high risk groups who smoke, drink alcohol or are over 40 years of age.
The point is: early detection, better chances of treating cancer. So if you belong to the high risk group mentioned above, a visit to the dentist is in order.
Mothers ought to drive this bit into their kids' heads, especially when they have to drag their kids to the dentist.
