Beware of This “Plastic Surgeon”

If you're one of those people who opt to go on a cosmetic surgery vacation outside the United States to save money, then go ahead. Just steer clear of this "plastic surgeon" in Vietnam:

A medical school in central Vietnam confirms it did not confer a Doctor of Medicine to a plastic surgeon alleged of serious misconduct at his clinics, police Sunday said.

Nguyen Xuan Ai, who claimed to have graduated from the Hue Medical School, committed scores of wrongdoings in his unlicensed plastic surgery clinics in Ho Chi Minh City over a long period, including offering unauthorized services and illegally detaining patients. [Thanh Nien News.com]

Now that's something new. A "plastic surgeon" illegally detaining patients? For what? Thanh Nien tells us more.

Ai's plastic surgery clinics were closed after complaints from a patient earlier this month that a clinic had illegally detained her for 10 days to perform a tummy tuck against her will.

This is one sick, twisted guy. The report does not say anything whether a tummy tuck was indeed forcibly performed on the woman, but being detained in his clinic for 10 days is torture enough.

That's one problem with "medical tourism". The rates may be a lot cheaper, but far too many quacks like this Vietnamese "doctor" abound, and there are far too many gullible tourists who engage their services and later regret the results. Worse, some don't live to regret it. This is why checking up on a doctor's background and track record before undergoing surgery is an absolute necessity. Your looks, limb and life depend on it.
