We have often been at the receiving end of endless lectures about how we're going to be successful in whatever career paths we take as long as we have the necessary qualifications, an unwavering passion for whatever it is we do, and just a bit of luck.
But more often than not, these lectures miss something that's so important and so real: we also need to look good to succeed in the traditional corporate world. Not just the nice-suit-neat-hairstyle variety of looking good, but "looking good" of the more physiological sort.
This may sound cruel, but it is a reality that, in the traditional corporate world, wearing Armani, the most expensive cologne and the coolest shoes won't matter a whit if you've got, say, an extra set of teeth on display every time you smile.
This example is actually taken from reality. A friend of mine who recruits people for a bank once turned down an applicant for a marketing position. The reason: crooked teeth.
Never mind that the guy graduated magna cum laude, passed the interview with flying colors and has had more than enough experience for the job. It really pained my friend, because the guy was indeed qualified for the job. The problem is, she needed to hire a bit of a looker because making presentations to potential clients was part of the job, and she was worried those crooked teeth might turn clients off.
The same disadvantage as far as looks are concerned also happen to older job applicants. It is a fact of life that a person's looks diminish as he or she grows old. Therefore, their career prospects are in danger of being derailed by younger and definitely more attractive applicants.
It is perhaps for this reason that some older job applicants resort to cosmetic surgery.
With cosmetic surgery getting more and more mainstream with television shows like Nip/Tuck and Extreme Makeover, veteran workers are now more open to going under a cosmetic surgeon's knife in order to enhance their careers.
Among the cosmetic procedures these seasoned professionals go for to enhance their looks include dental veneers, eyelid surgery, facelifts, and of course, Botox injections. These people mostly believe that by going through any of these procedures, hunting for jobs will become less difficult, or they would become more competitive at work.
And judging from the way things are in the traditional corporate world, I think they're on to something.
