Dental Care Basics

kids-scary-teethIN an episode of "The Simpsons" a dentist presented the so-called "Book of British Smiles" to a boy in order to put the fear of God in him and make him agree to a medical checkup.

It worked since the boy was scared out of his wits with the photos of the Queen of England and Prince Charles sporting decaying, yellowed broken teeth.

Who knows whether that tactic is used in other clinics but dentists have been known to employ the strangest methods to convince, cajole and even threaten patients into getting their teeth checked out.

Though there are practical tips to whitening teeth-no, using chalk on one's molars is so passé and downright ridiculous-it always pays to listen to the dentist when it comes to taking care of one's teeth.

There is of course the usual advice of gargling every morning-especially after a healthy round of oral sex the night before but don't mention that to your partner---and following it up with some brushing to protect those sparkly whites.

Brushing one's teeth had for the most part been taken for granted even in the age of computers and Wi-Fi. There's always some Clorets on the side, one might reason.

squinting-manBut technically though, Clorets isn't the easy step solution to bad breath. Ladling that fluoride on one's teeth complements mouthwash and is in fact the primary defense against yellowing teeth and bad breath.

This is followed up by flossing which even hookers like Julia Roberts's character in "Pretty Woman" appreciate.

And then there's the reliable mouthwash that hides your beer breath and smoker's cough.

If this reads like an ad from the American Dental Association then so be it. Remember, good teeth and gums always makes a strong first impression on family, friends and workers alike.

Or else one might become just the latest entry into that embarrassing "Book of British Smiles."
