Female Hair Loss Story

Until recently, hair loss was something that was generally perceived as a male problem.

    Not anymore.

More and more women are coming out of the hair loss closet like Cheryl Brewster, whose struggle with hair loss is featured in a Costa Contra Times.com report.

Cheryl Brewster was the envy of every gym rat, with her hard body and shoulder-length, sun-kissed locks.

So when her hair began falling out two years ago, the personal trainer was devastated.

"My part was getting wider, I could see more of my scalp and it was no coincidence that clumps of hair were falling out in the shower," says Brewster, 40, of Orinda.

The report says that Brewster was diagnosed with female-pattern baldness, a condition which so many women have been suffering but have been too embarrassed to put out into the open. But with new treatments like Rogaine now available, a lot of women have gone public about their hair loss, like Cheryl Brewster.

And they're doing the public a great favor, as published stories of their condition increase awareness of the condition. On top of that, heightened public awareness could give rise to more studies that could pave the way for more effective treatments, or even a cure.
