Flying Cars, Anyone?

fying carOK, that would be asking a lot. I personally would want a flying car to save me from the horrible traffic that's getting on my nerves every time I drive to work, but the invention of a flying car is probably a few centuries more into the future. The only time we see cars take flight are in movies like The Fifth Element.

However, an Aston-Martin did just that a little over a week ago. As a matter of fact, that Aston Martin car flew farther than the Wright Brothers did in 1903.

The "flight" took place during a practice lap at Mid-Ohio Raceway. The car, a 009 Aston Martin ALMS, went off the track and took to the air, "flying" 142 feet before landing safely in the dirt off the track. Its airborne feat surpassed that of the first airplane tested by the Wright Brothers by 22 feet.

car flyingAccording to reports, the reason why the car and its unidentified driver ("pilot" would probably be more appropriate) unintentionally took flight was the wet track. Luckily, there were no people and other cars on that part of the track at the time of the accident, and no one was hurt.

What's amazing is that throughout its "flight", the car remained level. We've seen other accidents involving cars somersaulting through the air, which was generally bad news for the cars' drivers.

Here's a video of the flying car. The pictures posted here, however, look a lot better.
