Technorati tags: facial plastic surgery, face transplant
Finally, after months of waiting, the medical team raring to perform the world's first full face transplant has been given the official go-signal.
CTV.ca gives us the details:
The team headed by Peter Butler will begin examining potential recipients and will draw up a short list of patients within the next year.
Butler said he was "delighted" to have been given the go-ahead for the pioneering surgery by the research ethics committee at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, North London.
"We can now begin to evaluate patients and draw up a short list of four people who want to undergo this procedure," he said in a statement.
The pioneering British plastic surgeon also said that their approach toward their goal will be cautious and careful, and that they will not rush into things. The operation, he said, may even take them months of preparation before they could carry it out.
There are so many technical, psychological and ethical issues surrounding this groundbreaking procedure. The psychological impact on the patient remains to be seen, and then there's the danger of tissue rejection. Still many only wish Dr. Butler and his colleagues success in this endeavor. You could just imagine the help and hope it could offer to so many people around the world horribly disfigured by animal attacks, accidents and fire.
