    Tattoos have floated in and out of the fashion mainstream in recent years but never really went away since it had been with people for well over a millennia.

    In certain tribes and cultures body markings and piercings connote a special place of honor among them.

    Indians for one are said to don face paint and Maoris at one time wore facial tattoos as a mark of high status.

    Nowadays tattoos are commonly associated with rock stars and other entertainment personalities and even sensitive, artiste types.

    One can perhaps count by the handful the number of actresses who don't have tattoos in some body part or another.

    Hollywood's goddess of the moment Angelina Jolie has a tattoo on her navel supposedly (don't know which part exactly but she does have a tattoo) that is in Hindu which translated means "What Nourishes Me Also Destroys Me" (weird).

    Want more celebrity name droppables? bodyart2There's Christina Aguilera whose preference for changing looks like her hair color thankfully doesn't cover her tattoos.

    And then there's former sweet girl Alyssa Milano who matured rather nicely and had tattoos placed on her ankles prior to her marriage.

    But while some girls are not averse to tattoos it's the men that comprise the majority when it comes to wearing body art.

    One need only look at Motley Crue's band member Tommy Lee to see that bad boys with tattoos still command their share of the fairer sex. .

    Among wrestlers, Duane "The Rock" Johnson sports tattoos as part of his cultural heritage. And Shaquille O' Neal has the Superman logo tattoed on his right arm.

    Weird and outright blasphemous though it may be to conservatives, the continued popularity of tattoos in mainstream society attest to the fact that its appeal lies beyond aesthetics and trends.
