Male baby boomers seek plastic surgery

A new study conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reveals that there are approximately one million men in the US who had gone under the knife last year.

According to the study, liposuction has become the most popular surgical procedure among men. There were about 53,263 liposuction procedures performed last year, most of them from male baby-boomers.

The current trend suggests that male baby-boomers have realized that they are competing with younger, healthier men both in the corporate world and in the social arena. This is the reason why many of them chose minimally invasive procedures to help them maintain their edge.

Aside from trimming excess fat from their tummies through liposuction and tummy tuck, men are also trying to get rid of the stubborn fat in their necks and under their chins.

Men are becoming a huge market for plastic surgery procedures. In fact, Abbey Loans in the UK recently reported that 918,000 adults are planning to borrow money from them in order to pay for their cosmetic surgery makeovers. The firm stressed that in total, these adults would be borrowing a total of approximately £1.4 billion.

  • Plastic surgery for men

Man, no doubt... we men are becoming a huge market for plastic surgery. I've had a couple laser treatments, myself. When I was researching treatments on the web, I saw at a site called the guy's guide to plastic surgery that male plastic surgery was up 17.5% in the UK in 2007, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. And, yeah, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons states that 1,107,048 procedures were performed on men in the US in 2007. So, a man shouldn't feel ashamed if he's considering a "cosmetic" procedure. I didn't and I don't. Just be sure to do your research.

    Daddy Do-Over

The last couple of years, all we've heard about is the "mommy makeover." I'm a plastic surgery copywriter, and I wrote the Web site, the Guy's Guide to Plastic Surgery for Men. It's a great resource for those men considering plastic surgery, in that in provides just the basics about today's most popular procedures. So, it's not overwhelming. There's also a plastic surgeon directory, so that men can find a surgeon in their area who specializes in helping men to look their best. I posted here, though, not so much to promote my site, but also to recommend the following site to boomer men - boomerful.com. Although the site is tailored to boomer women, there's a nice interview there this month about plastic surgery for boomer men. Given that more and more men are not only considering plastic surgery, but following through with it, that's why I said we're likely to start hearing about the "daddy do-over."

Who do men want to look like?

I work with a doctor performing cosmetic surgery in Houston (I'm not a doc), and I recently saw the results of a pretty interesting study conducted by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery... they asked thousands of plastic surgeons in over 80 countries which celebrity name comes up most in consultation. Who do men want to look like? Here were the results:

    Hair... Tom Cruise
    Forehead... Cruise
    Eyes... George Clooney
    Cheeks... Clooney
    Nose... Brad Pitt
    Lips... Clooney
    Chin... Clooney
    Chest... Arnold Schwarzenegger
    Abdomen... Pitt
    Buttocks... Pitt
    Legs... David Beckham

re: who do men want to look like...

... i work with an east coast surgeon specializing in cosmetic surgery, Long Island men don't want to look like... mickey rourke... carrot top... bruce jenner... kenny rogers... barry manilow. i'm not a doc, but rather just a writer, but having worked with several plastic surgeons, i do know that one way to increase the odds of a successful surgery is to have realistic expectations. another, is to go slowly. taking ten years off your appearance is a more realistic goal than attempting to take off twenty or thirty years.

Do guys look for something different in a plastic surgeon

I'm looking for help for an article I'm working on. Is anyone aware of research that details how men differ from women when selecting a plastic surgeon?

The piece was inspired by a gal pal of mine who remarked that the appearance of a plastic surgeon, how attractive, how well dressed, how...um...hygienic...he was all would weigh heavily on her choice of surgeons. She even pointed to this plastic surgery practice in Naperville and suggested that the doctor was "cute".

I have yet to find the data. Someone out there must have studied how men differ in evaluating a surgeon for an elective procedure. Can anyone point me to a study?

I'm especially interested to know how men react when considering a female plastic surgeon. Does the gender of a surgeon impact how a man perceives the surgeon's competence and ability? Do female surgeons see a significantly larger percentage of female patients?

Thanks for any input you can provide.
