Men in Skirts

men in skirtsOne of the earliest public signs we've learned to decipher are toilet signs. A toilet door plastered with a figure that looks like a man says we boys should do our business there. On the other hand, only females are allowed access through a toilet door that bears the same icon, but this time with a triangular shape representing a skirt right in the middle.

But with more and more men in skirts walking the streets, things are beginning to get a little confusing.

We live in a world where men are supposed to wear pants, where skirts are symbolic of femininity. But with almost all women wearing trousers nowadays, coming across a guy clad in a knee-length skirt inside a shopping mall wouldn't be totally unexpected. However, such a sight is bound to elicit homophobic reactions in this largely homophobic society, which is perhaps why there are a number of websites dedicated to enlightening people about the idea of skirts for men.

The funny thing is, there's nothing new about the idea of men wearing skirts. Dresses and skirts were fashion staples for the ancient Egyptians. Alexander the Great conquered the known world in a skirt. For centuries, countless men have proudly worn kilts, that traditional Scottish Highland dress so expressly showcased in the Oscar-winning Braveheart. Then there are the Southeast Asian men who have long been enjoying the comfort of the sarong. These garments are definitely skirts no matter how we look at them.

Still, it takes a lot of guts for a heterosexual male to wear skirts in public in these modern times. More often than not, skirt-wearing men are put in the same category as cross-dressers. And it's a certainty that men wearing skirts are bound to attract hecklers. But surprisingly, a growing number of straight guys have taken to wearing skirts for a variety of reasons, from the comfort a little draft between the legs offers to claims that a guy in a skirt oozes self-assurance and confidence, and therefore attracts the ladies.

I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather run around the neighborhood naked than be caught dead in a micro-mini. Not that I have something against men who wear skirts; It just isn't my thing. But if it is yours, then go ahead and wear a skirt. These tips on selecting a skirt might be of help.

Boy, is this gonna change the way we go to the john.

men should just get out there and wear that skirt. stop talking about it and just do it.

    Men in Skirts

With a Hot Aussie Summer on the horizon, A skirt for men would be the obvious shoice in place of shorts and long trousers.
However, My wife has voiced her objection to me wearing a skirt even at home and until they move away from being just a novelty item on the runway to becoming a mainstream fashion itemm, we will never know the comfort we could be enjoying.
Lets see them at the department stores soom.

    Aussie men in skirts

I agree with Ausskirt but it takes a lot of guts to wear a skirt in public in Australia. You need to be tough enough to ignore the questioning looks and be brave enough to over the terror that strikes if you see your boss or clients coming around the corner.
Yes it is far more comfortable to wear a skirt but alas I lack the toughness to do it.

    Skirts for men.

    Me too

As a happily married guy who loves to wear skirts, I can tell you that the biggest problem is keeping the ladies' hands off! The ladies do love it, to the point where my wife will tell me to just go on with one of them. The style possibilities for a guy really open up when you look beyond jeans and khakis.

I'd rather run around the neighborhood naked than be caught dead

    As for the authors comment - I'd rather run around the neighborhood naked than be caught dead in a micro-mini - Well, micro-mini's are way too short for males, due to male plumbing but;
Being able to wear skirts instead of just pants, shorts keeps me clothed, cause I'd rather be naked anywhere then to always have to rearrange my crotch.

    Toilet trouble?????

    Question:
How so? Besides the fact that it could make it possible for places to open Unisex restrooms (saving costs) as is a practice already in many European places. Many Airports already send ALL users to one or other restroom while cleaning closed restrooms. Example for fact - Brussels, BE - while the male restroom was being clean ALL males were sent to the "Ladies" and the oposite when needed.
I see a Unisex restroom void of urinals, which in many places would NOT be a bad think. Urinals can cause more stench and grime then stalled toilets.

    skirts and kilts

I've worn kilts and male-looking skirts (think Diesel, G-Star) to London on many an occasion and have had the best days of my life. It's a great ice breaker and women do feel more comfortable talking to you. When you can be seen to break the ice first, abandoning the macho uniform without abandoning a masculine look, people respond differently and bring out their genuine side to meet yours. Of course there is always the inbuilt nervousness because of years of conditioning, but that gets less and less as time goes on. It's not absurd at all--it's healthy for the body and the mind (and my girlfriend has decided they're great on me!)

Real men wear whatever they want

I wear skirts a couple of times per week. I like it - I find it relaxing - and it is a joy to be able to get away from the claustrophobic conformity of blue jeans or black trousers that seems to restrict the fashion choices of most men here in the UK.

Perhaps the main reason that I wear skirts is simply because I want to - and I refuse to keep my choice to wear skirts hidden behind closed doors. I want to be open about it - this is who I am - why should I hide any aspect of my self?

    Anyhow - I've got great legs! :o)

You never know till you give it a go

I never had any notion of wearing kilts or skirts until I married my wife and she got me a kilt to wear at Scottish Country Dancing. Then one day four years ago I sustained a leg injury and had to wear the kilt to work. I thought everybody would laugh at me but it was so well received by everyone and so somfortable that after my leg healed I continued to wear kilts as everyday wear and now I wear kilts more often than trousers.

    I love silk skirt

I love the female style silk skirt, better long enough to cover whole leg. Unfortunately my wife does not like it anymore, does not allow me to ware it anymore, though I only want it after bath, the feeling is really like in heaven. Never thought of going out and never has the desire to try anything else. I wish someday man can dress freely without others concern too much, like females in man's cloth.

i like to dress like girls

i like to wear short skirts and panties.dont forget to shave your leg s before wearing it.

    Just wore skirt

I just bought a skirt and thong panties from a womens store, I called first and spoke to the mgr earlier today, I brought them home -tried them on with a pair of thigh hi's and went outside to take a walk around the house (10pm). Everything was so comfy and the breeziness was wonderful. I do perspire there a lot in trowsers. Then I went for a drive - Wow - why havent we ever heard from the gal's how nice driving is in a skirt...

    skirts

I enjoy wearing a skirt. When I do, which is once or twice a week, I wear a pair of panties, stockings, garter belt and an underskirt. I just love the feeling of a skirt swirling around my legs. The girls like it too and occasionally send me their panties (worn of course) which is even better.

    Guys in skirts

I have been wearing skirts for years.
Nobody cares or even notices anymore.
I always wear tights and knee high boots.

    Convenience of skirts.

I'm a 66 yr. old male with cancer and total incontinence requiring that I wear diapers. It is easier to do diaper changes in a skirt than making a mess of trousers trying to change diapers. I intend to live each day wearing skirts for the conveniences.

    skirts

Where in the UK can we wear skirts without being the subject of homophobic attention, apart from in gay bars? SIGH! I love wearing mine with heels & nylons

    guy's skirts

Last summer I was working in old cut-off jeans, yeah some guys still like them.

Anyway they ripped and there was no way to change so I finished the job in a jean skirt. Didn't have any problems, felt good and thought "This is ok." Got back home trimed things even then cut 3 more shorts into skirts. Now I wear them more and more in more places. There are looks and a few laughs but skirts are just great!

    skirts

There is nothing wrong with men wearing skirts or any women's attire for that matter. Women wear everything men wear and us men should have that same right. I'm a 39 year old, 100% heterosexual man and have been wearing pantyhose since I was a young child with shorts, dresses, skirts and high heels. Yes, I am a crossdresser and there is nothing wrong with it since it's not hurting anyone or anything. My mother found out I liked to crossdress when I was 8 years old and she started buying me girls clothes and letting me wear them around the house. Twenty years ago, I started wearing pantyhose with women's shorts and tops out in public as a man and have been doing so regularly ever since. I regularly run my errands, go shopping and out to eat dressed this way. Most people don't seem to notice and the few that do, rarely do any of them say anything. About eight year ago, I started wearing high heels out in public with women's slacks and a nice blouse or top; usually as a man without trying to disguise myself as a woman. More recently, I started going out in public wearing skirts with pantyhose, heels and a nice blouse or top. Sometimes I go out dressed this way as a man and sometimes I fix up my hair real nice and wear makeup and some nice earrings. I've had very long hair ever since I was 12 years old. I got my ears pierced for the first time in 1986 when I was 18 years old. I got them pierced a second time a year later and a third time two years after that. I know all this seems crazy to some people, especially going out in public fully dressed enfemme as a man. I know this is pretty rare to see and I'm one of the few men that have enough courage to do it. There are a lot of crossdressers (more than most people think) that go out dressed enfemme that are very passable as women. When I fix my hair and do my makeup, I can pass fairly well, but sometimes I enjoy going out dressed enfemme as a man. Some people don't approve what I do, but I enjoy dressing the way I like. It's totally harmless and I'm not hurting anyone or anything. It's just clothes.

    skirts

I love women and couldn't get enough of them when I was younger, now happily married. I am afraid to wear womens clothes publicly, but have been privately for years. I love the variety and styles and always please my wife when I pick her clothes. I pick hers better than my own. Women have so many options, men have pants. The only time I ever get to do this publicly, which I do for three days going to various events, is halloween. I think my wife suspects something, because she shaves my legs and pubs and tells me I look better in her clothes (on halloween) then she does and tells me I have a girls butt and legs. She has said more than once, you would be a pretty girl if done up right, you should become a drag queen. I wonder if she is just testing me, so I always say ill or thanks or that's nice. Never comes up in the bedroom or anything, so don't know if she would be turned on. Think if I admitted it, she might say, i knew it. I don't want to be with you anymore or your sick or something. Too afraid. At nite on several occaisons I left in sweats and switched into a skirt or womens stretchy pants and drove around and got out of the car in dark places, it is such a great free feeling, just embarassed. Sorry to the brave ones, why don't one of you start some type of fashion week in the United States for men in skirts, dresses, stretchy pants, and even capri. I wear mens sexy underwear, either string bikini or greek bikini and have once or twice worn them at a beach or in my pool, but become very embarassed if somebody might see me that I know. There are lots of mens nylon and polyester spandex bikini and string bikini and thongs out there, so more willing to be bold with that, because I can say, its for men. Help us, there are a lot of us out there, just terrified, especially of family and friends because of the stereotyping and bashing.
Love it and won't stop, just won't tell anyone until it is acceptable.
    Bye for now!!

    Micro skirts etc. for men

As a male, wearing micro skirts, thongs, g strings, tiny (front only) loin cloths in leather, is just utopia. They are a wow on my beach especially when whipped with wet sea weed.

Style Differences Are Not Sex Differences

People know so little of history. We have a whole generation of females who assume their sex has always been free to wear pants. VERY FALSE! In 1912 Mary Walker was the ONLY woman in pants in NY state. But in WWII, 17 million women went into factory work. Pants started to be worn for safety/efficiency. After the war, women still could not wear pants to school, church, or restaurants. That opposition crumbled by the mid-1970's. Horseback riding put men into pants. Social forces, NOT CHROMOSOMES, cause clothing behavior. The old Romans first term for pants was "FEMINALIA." As of 2009 the Greek military still maintains a unit in skirts.

Men in skirts are the best

I like men in skirts, they are the best because they can show their personality, confidience, they are just innovative, creative and flexible.

Maybe I am wrong because most writers are masculin, but I want to add my opinon too.

Yes, as said above, these men in skirts are different, lovely different. We women wearing all what was supposedly out of their wardrobe, and we did not change our peronality, just make it stronger.
And I see the same with men doing this - men, please do not hide with what are you wearing, how you're dressing - it is wonderful that we have this men "thinking out of the box" and wearing how they are feeling. This men are more trustful to me because I can see how they are feeling. Everybody can wear pants, shirt, jacket and tie, the CEO next door, banker downstairs and gangsters at night. No diffrences. Differences are above me, the men in skirts or dresses, I can imagine how they get dressed like we do, thinking what matches, what fits, have difficulties with their garter belt or have to watch their nylons, keeping legs together when sitting, watch who's behind when going upstairs, etc.
But most important are their open personality; all skirted men I met so far were smiling, friendly, frankly. Hmmmmm, I would go with them.

    One of the obstacles

    People saying something like
"I won't do it until it is main stream".

Do people with this attitude not understand that it won't become mainstream until people lose this attitude.

There are dress codes that forbid men wearing skirts, why they are not considered discriminatory is beyond me. They are the definition of sexual discrimination.

I love skirts and wear them when I can, however the career I am in frowns on less than masculine men, and so I find myself hiding...which I hate.

I really wish we men would get the courage and fight for the abolition of all gender related laws.

    Being able to wear skirts

Being able to wear skirts instead of just pants, shorts keeps me clothed, cause I'd rather be naked anywhere then to always have to rearrange my crotch.

    Healty and fun

I am 32 Yo, spent a lot of time at my desk, I just put up to date with this blog, the comments are very insightful.

I worn two skirts last year(2009) the last time being a more rationalized thing, It was an issue of freedom of choice. But I realized that pants aren't that healty.

After reading the post of the men who wears them for his incontinences, I just came across the fact that pants hurts prostate, and that it would be no necessity to wear a skirt for the ease of changing diapers if, in the first place, males where wearing skirts.

dont ask for permition, just grab one and go out. The law is on your side. Be modest

    m en/boys wearing skirts

I like to wear a-line loose pleated skirts, the material they're made of usually doesn't mean anything, except wool THEY ITCH. I have worn skirts and dresses since I was 11 yrs of age. I don't believe in gendercizing articles of clothing. I am comfortable in a skirt and own 13 of them, plus 6 skorts. All are in normal male colors except for the 2 plaid ones (blue, khaki and black). Although I've thought of wearing a floral printed skirt as long as it is not loud.
The fact that I'm a male has no bearing as to whether I wear a sskirt or not, that is determined by the weather here in Northeast Ohio. I have skirts from in-store and off the internet. I do not try to appear as a female, but as a male whose comfort comes first. As far as underwear, some panties (depending type of skirt)seem to be better then tighty-whiteys or boxers, especially nylon panties in briefs, no bikini or thongs. With the skorts, since they have built in nylon stretch shorts like mens swim trunks, don't require the use of underwear.
