  WOMEN'S attitudes towards tattoos have greatly varied over the years; from initial repulsion to outright fascination, thanks largely in part to the willingness and adventuruous spirit of popular women personalities.

  Whether they be breast tattoos, lower back tattoos (a favorite among females since it makes them feel sexy or so I've heard) or ankle tattoos women practically have them from any part of their anatomy.

  The average age for a girl to have a tattoo ranges from as young as 15 to even beyond the 40s.

  Like smoking and drinking, men introduce women to the mystery of tattooing as a sort of "rite of passage" similar to what boys experience with circumcision.

  Just how popular are tattoos among women, particularly women celebrities? According to a 2002 survery by FHM-US magazine, eight of the top 10 women celebrities have one or more tattoos.

  And just like women, men's attitude towards women with tattoos underwent a gradual sea change though generally it took years for mainstream society to adjust to the idea of tattooed women.

  In an excerpt entitled "Factors that influence attitudes toward women with tattoos" from the article "Sex Roles: A Journal of Research" an established male tattoo artist named Steward described women with tattoos as "lank-haired scags, with ruined landscapes of faces and sagging hose and run-over heels."

  A less than flattering statement to be sure and in an age where patriarchs still rule it is more acceptable for men to have tattoos than women.

  It was said that in the late 19th century women were tattooed in order to pursue careers as sideshow circus attractions.

  As attitudes towards women with tattoos waxed and waned over the years the emergence of rock music introduced with it a sense of defiance of society's expectations and norms and it thus became acceptable for both men and women to sport tattoos.

  Maybe it's the turn-on of seeing their own skin being worked on a swarthy, balding man twice their age or the curiosity of what it feels like to bear a tattoo at least once in their life.

  Whatever the reasons men are only too happy to oblige with a woman or a girl's request for a tattoo. Unless that woman or girl looks like a guy or has a wide lardass.
