With the launch of the Wii, Nintendo's newest-and much-hyped-video game console just a little over two weeks away, the Japanese company is stepping things up with its announcement that there will be 62 game titles available for the Wii within the year.

    CNET News has more:

In a statement issued late Tuesday, the Japanese company said there will be 32 new titles for the $250 Wii by the end of the year, as well as a roster of 30 classic games.

Among the new titles will be "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess," "Madden NFL '07," "Need for Speed: Carbon," "Call of Duty 3," "Marvel Ultimate Alliance," "Rampage: Total Destruction," "SpongeBob SquarePants: The Creature from Krusty Krab," "Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam," "Red Steel" and many others.

Nintendo just outdid the 22 titles that Sony Corporation has announced for the PlayStation 3, which is scheduled for launch on November 17, just two days before the Wii goes on sale.

Expect these companies to try upstaging each other in the run-up to the launch dates this month. And Sony surely won't take this sitting down. After all, Sony's supremacy in the video game consoles field is facing a serious threat from the innovative Wii, the first ever video game system to make it to the Toys R Us "Fabulous 15", the elite of the toy retailing giant's "Hot Toy" list.
