Plastic surgery “superdraw” draws flak

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) is up in arms against Europa International's "trivialization" of cosmetic surgery by running the world's first cosmetic surgery "superdraw".

The draw, which offers a cosmetic surgery procedure as a prize, has been criticized by surgeons as "plumbing new depths" on the part of the Prague-based firm.

    More from BBC News:

People are encouraged to enter the company's draw via text or phone through a section on their website entitled "win your surgery for just £1.50".

The monthly draw gives people in the UK the chance of winning £6,000 towards cosmetic surgery.

Douglas McGeorge, consultant plastic surgeon and president of BAAPS, described the scheme as a marketing gimmick.

He said: "I am appalled at this new scheme but unfortunately not surprised.

"Companies are plumbing new depths to take advantage of a growing interest in plastic surgery."

  • Nobody's a Winner

Boy, this is something I've read a lot of lately. And I don't mean in the last couple of years - today. I read another blog today that talked about a contest in America where the "winner" received as a prize a free "boob job." The "lucky" woman received the award from a (in)famous porn star. The blog mentioned how a little research shows that the surgeon who will perform the surgery isn't even board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Not illegal (I think), but NOT good (I know). Then, I read a post about DIY plastic surgery. What?! People, I'm not a surgeon, but I work with a breast augmentation surgeon in Indiana, so I've seen the difference plastic surgery can make in a patient's life. I can only imagine the damage that might be done with DIY surgery, or when performed by someone not trained to perform plastic surgery, or when it's the result of a draw. Don't do it. If you think that plastic surgery might improve or enhance your looks and thus improve your life, save up, consider financing or talk to a BOARD CERTIFIED plastic surgeon about installment payments. Most of all, remember... if it's free, it's probably because it's so bad they can't give it away.

    Gambling With Your Life

Anonymous is one snappy writer. I agree with what he/she says, 100%. I'd like to reinforce the whole safety angle a little more though. I'm really against people thinking they can "pop" in for surgery and look fabulous the next day. I'm not a big fan of blaming the media generally, but here, I'm going to go ahead and blame the media. I thought the plastic surgery reality TV shows were kinda falling out of fashion, but I saw one last week on a certain channel I won't mention (it rhymes with gem tee vee) that totally glossed over the recovery process. I work with a plastic surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation on Long Island, and his core philosophy is educating patients so they make informed decisions on breast surgery. The odds a are billion to one that this "boob lottery" is a good thing.
