Quack Goes The Surgeon

  • in: Cut the Gut Tag(s):

surgeons from hellNobody's physically perfect. Despite many people having physical attributes to die for, there's always something about the human body that helps drive that point home. That's why many turn to plastic surgery to get whatever nature denied them. And with ever- improving technology, procedures like liposuction, rhinoplasty and the tummy tuck have become safer than ever before. Or have they?

It generally is safer when the plastic surgeon doing the procedure is certified by a reputable medical society, such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Board-certified plastic surgeons are extensively educated and trained, have an excellent track record, and have churned out a long list of satisfied patients.

But there's no denying the fact that there are unscrupulous doctors in the United States and all over the world who pass themselves off as plastic surgeons. These quacks promise potential clients that Barbie and Ken would have nothing on them once they avail of their services.

quack surgeonUnfortunately, a lot of patients fall for that pitch, especially upon learning about the much cheaper fees they offer. They undergo the procedure, then end up looking a lot like Frankenstein's creature's distant relative. Worse, many have already died under the knife of these frauds.

The Internet is filled with horror stories of cosmetic surgery gone wrong. These stories should spur those who are thinking about getting some cosmetic work done to take the necessary precautions to avoid bad plastic surgery. It is still best to get the services of a board-certified plastic surgeon. That way, the price a person pays for just a taste of perfection won't have to be that high.

  • Unfortunately...

... it's not just "quacks" posing as doctors. I work with an Schenectady cosmetic surgeon, and although I'm not a doctor myself, from my readings, apparently anyone with an M.D. can claim to be a "cosmetic surgeon," even if they have no training or experience. And with the popularity of botox and other injectables, more and more MD's are selling themselves as cosmetic surgeons. It's good advice to recommend that prospective patients look for a board-certified plastic surgeon!

RE: Quack Ductors... I Mean, Doctors

I work with a doctor performing plastic surgery in Houston, and I completely agree with Terry's comment that patients should look for a board certified plastic surgeon. Although, where does the prospective patient look to see if their surgeon is board certified? All of the following organizations have some sort of 'find a board certified ps':

    * American Board of Plastic Surgery
    * American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
    * American Society of Plastic Surgeons

Plastic surgery is elective, but it's still surgery. Research your surgery, and research your surgeon.
