At the height of Communist rule in Russia, the only cars that worked Moscow's streets were probably the Zil limousines for Party officials and a handful of cheap but privately owned cars. But with the demise of Communism, many Russians have struck it rich, some of them through oil. With their newfound wealth, many have turned to splurging on luxury cars, making them a common sight in the streets of the Russian capital.
If Lenin were raised from the dead today, seeing Lamborghinis, Jaguars and Ferraris race along his beloved city's streets would probably kill him again. According to the Gulf Times:
Sales of foreign cars as a whole are exploding here. In the first half of 2006, foreign car sales were up 60% over the first half of 2005, totaling 398,000 vehicles at a total cost of about $9bn (7bn euros).
My, how times have changed.
