Smoking and Aging

The popular ad line "Cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health" has long been a failure in serving its purpose. I don't believe it was even effective in discouraging non-smokers from smoking; the same way that it has failed to convince smokers to stop smoking.

Now, we can dispose of that rusty line because something more persuasive has come into view. A new computer software is out to scare teens away from the nicotine vice. CBS 4 Boston tells the story.

Anti-smoking programs try to shock kids by showing them pictures of what happens inside of the body to their lungs, but now, a computer software gives them a realistic picture of what it can do to the outside.

The software, developed by the Canadian company Aprilage, takes a current photograph and ages it, showing teens what they will look like if they smoke a pack of cigarettes a day.

This is a terrific strategy that comes right on timing. A horribly wrinkled face is more convincing than say, lung cancer? That sounds funny but that is really true. People don't get to stop smoking until cancer or any other terminal disease starts its onslaught.

This is a good way to persuade teens to stay away from nicotine if they don't want to look like witches or Shar Peis when they're at their sixties or seventies.

  • You are what you… smoke

I just saw another blog at another site that asked if smoking affects your appearance. My subject is sort of tongue in cheek, but it's true; you are what you eat… and drink… and smoke. I work with a ps who performs Cosmetic surgery in New York, and patients are reminded everyday that smoking cigarettes will age you beyond your years... as will excessive tanning. And if you need another reason to quit, here's one: if you're thinking about having a plastic surgery procedure sometime down the road, you'll have to quit several weeks prior to your procedure and stay quit for several weeks afterwards. So, why not just go ahead and quit now?
