Sports Car Dreaming

sports carWe guys have always been fascinated with sports cars. Images of these sleek and stylish automobiles have been toying with our imaginations ever since we were old enough to watch TV and read. Most of us have daydreamed about getting behind the wheel of one of these babies, which are typically known for their great power, high-speed capability, and really smashing good looks. It also helps that these sports cars worthy of James Bond have this rather clichéd reputation of being chick magnets.

Sadly, the chances of us regular guys getting the chance to prove or debunk that particular reputation for ourselves is as distant as Proxima Centauri is to the Earth. The damn things, it goes without saying, are just too expensive.

OK, some cheaper sports cars may now be available in the market, but most of them are obviously markdowns from their launching price tags. Usually, brand new sports cars cost somewhere between fifty and a hundred-fifty grand, just like the 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera S, which bears a price tag of $81,400.

I'd probably have to work until I'm 90 before I could save up even half that amount; And if I'm dreaming about getting, say, a Bugatti Veyron, the most powerful, and fastest street-legal production car in the world, I may have to pull off a Faust and sell my soul to the devil.

At $1.2 million, the Bugatti Veyron is not even the most expensive among the cars included in ESPN's list of the Top Ten Crash and Burn Super Cars. That distinction belongs to the Ferrari FXX, a limited production sports car that will set a buyer back by some $1.8 million, plus taxes.

Since the Bugatti Veyron, with its W-16 engine that can produce 1,001 horsepower, 250+ mph top speed and zero-to-60 time of three seconds, is virtually impossible to reach, I'd probably go buy the cheapest car on the list, the 2006 Fisker Latigo CS, which sells for $180,000. All I have to do is do all kinds of odd jobs for about a century and I'll be good for it.
