There will always come a time when men need to attend formal events that require them to wear ties. Yeah, ties. So what? What's the fuzz about ties anyway? Well, you are lucky if you're the type who is not bothered by wearing ties at all. But to those who completely shunned formal events just to avoid wearing a tie, this is quite a big deal.
According to Askmen.com, there are several ways to knot a tie and the most commonly used type is the Windsor style. This is also said to be the most traditional knot and more often than not, this is the first every guy has learned to make.
Another type derived from the Windsor is the Half Windsor knot, which is the choice to make if you want the conservative look of a Windsor minus the effort. This goes well with a dress shirt and blazer with a stiff collar to stress the knot's preppy nature.
You can also opt for a Four-in-hand knot, still derived from the Windsor style, when you need to be fashionable and wear a tie with casual clothes. A dress shirt with a semi-stiff collar layered under a denim or a leather jacket will go perfectly with this type of knot.
Lastly, if you want a knot that pairs well with most dress shirts, and is perfect for any occasion, try the Pratt or the Shelby knot. Here's how the Pratt knot is done:
1- Place the tie around your neck with the seam (the end with the tag) facing outward on both the slimmer and thicker ends. Note that the fatter end should be hanging lower than the shorter end on your chest.
2- Cross the two ends over to form an X and flip the larger end through the noose to form a knot around the smaller end.
3- Pull both ends apart quite tightly to ensure your knot is snug and bring the larger end of the tie over the smaller end to cover your first knot.
4- Loop the larger end through the noose and through the second knot you created, adjusting accordingly. [Askmen]
