The figures are in.
Nintendo announced that the Wii, its latest video game console, has sold more than 600,000 units after only 8 days in the North American market.
Newsfactor tells us more:
Nintendo is claiming a big victory in the first battle of the next-generation console wars, with new figures showing that North Americans snapped up more than 600,000 of its Wii video game systems since November 19, racking up $190 million in sales in just eight days.
Nintendo has been banking on its innovative new controller -- which uses motion sensors so it can act like a steering wheel, a tennis racket, or even a sword -- to differentiate the Wii from competitors.
So far, it appears that the controller is paying off as gamers pulled the console off the shelves in record numbers that have trounced sales of Sony's PlayStation 3. The PS3 is estimated to have sold approximately 200,000 units in the first week of sales.
Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, said that even with demand outstripping initial supplies for the Wii, "It's clear this is one of the 'gotta-have' products for the holiday season." Fils-Aime, in an apparent attempt to snub his chief rival, said in a statement: "We've shipped retailers several times the amount of hardware the other company was able to deliver for its launch around the same time -- and we still sold out."
Then there's the price. As said before in this blog, price really matters, especially when the Wii costs only half of the PS3's price.
However, the Wii, and the PS3 for that matter, still have a lot of catching up to do with Microsoft's Xbox 360, which has already sold approximately 6 million units since it launched last year.
